East Side Bar Crawl

It was a normal weekday just like any other but there was a fear growing inside of me...I didn't have any plans for the weekend and none of the parties that were currently being blogged about sounded interesting.  So what's an Austinite to do?

Make shit up.

So I designed a bar crawl for myself and some friends that involved all of the east side bars that I had been meaning to check out but never had.  To make it interesting I added a game element and a prize to entice participants.  The rules got a little complicated but it was definitely a lot of fun (and like any crawl, got way better towards the end).  Rules and regulations to follow, but first the bars: we crawled from the Scoot Inn, to Rio Rita, to Shangri-La and finally to Pete's Bar getting stares everywhere we went.

The crawl worked like this:

  1. Take everyone to a bar and split them up into two teams.
  2. Everyone get a drink.
  3. Play a random game that only an individual can win (i.e. trivia, rock paper scissors, staring contest).  The winner is awarded two glow-in-the-dark stickers and his or her teammates get only one.  They also get to move on to the second bar while the losing team has to stay at the current bar and are awarded no stars.
  4. Everyone get a drink.
  5. When the losing team finishes their drink they meet back up with the winning team at the second bar.  While the winning team was waiting for the losing team to catch up, they were determining the next game.
  6. Now that the group is back together, divide the group into two new teams (this guarantees people are always meeting or socializing with new people).
  7. Everyone get a drink.
  8. Play the second game and then repeat the process until you have traveled to all of your bars

You can handle the awards and prizes in any way you see fit, but this is what I did.  The person in the lead (most stars) at each bar also gets the distinct privilege of wearing a yellow drinking jersey (which also happens to be the prize).  If there is a tie, the person who won the most recent challenge gets the jersey.  The person wearing the yellow jersey at the end, gets to keep it and of course all the glory.  The inspiration for the jersey of course was the Tour de France which was happening at the time so the official name I gave the crawl was El Tour de Bar and believe me, I will be doing it again next year.  Congratulations Nikki, who won this years tour (as well as a $10 side bet with Andrew).
